Cruising the Hudson with The Expendables

The ship set sail on June 12th, cruising through New York’s Hudson River. Aboard this kickin’ yacht party was Tropidelic and The Expendables, who treated their fans to an unforgettable night of good old reggae rock vibes. Both bands rock the boat in true reggae fashion by ‘lighting’ up the stage with sweet sounds of dub and overall love.

Arriving on the ship, I was greeted with some yummy treats, catered by Sancho’s Cantina and the sweet smell of sinsemilla. I wasn’t sure what to expect, it being the first time seeing a show on a yacht. As soon as I heard Tropidelic’s horns booming from the stage, I had no doubt that this was going to be a good night.

One of the telltale signs of a good reggae show is how the crowd moves and vibes to the music. Because Tropidelic are a fusion of hip hop, pop-punk and reggae, the Tropi-holics (as the band like to refer to their fans as) was a mix of headbangers, off-the-walls dancers and people who were just well bobbing along to the pulsating beat.

One of the most fun and unexpected parts of the performance was the drum line which broke out in the middle of the dance floor. James Begin (trombone/vocals) was able to play percussion drums, as well as rap. It was definitely a sight worth seeing. Tropidelic’s performance cracked up energy for the crowd to get ready for The Expendables.

It was so good to see the Expendables back on the east coast in the summertime, as they typically perform in New York City during winter. The performance itself was nothing short of amazing, opening up with their signature song “Sacrifice”. They also played more classics like “Down, Down, Down”, “Burn It Up”, “24/7”, “Let Her Go” and ended the set with “Bowl for Two”. They also treated the crowd with a Snoop Dogg classic and “I Got High” by Afroman.

Overall, the show could not have been any better. There was beer, two great reggae bands and, did I mention, we were on a boat? Both Tropidelic and The Expendables are on tour this summer, so make sure and check them out!
