Sold out crowds packed the cold and wet Queen Mary Events Park on Friday February 8th, for Day One of the Fourth Annual One Love Cali Reggae Festival in Long Beach, CA. Back up to three days from two last year, much like the weather, fans flooded the gates as LA-based Arise Roots could be heard playing their unique spin on reggae on the Koi CBD Main Stage. Shortly after, Passafire could be heard kicking off the SMKFLWR Side Stage for their third One Love Cali Reggae Fest appearance. Be sure to stay tuned for the TSR One Love Cali Reggae Fest interview with the guys! Up next were local boys Long Beach Dub Allstars on the Koi Stage while The Slackers, who are anything but, kept things rocking on the SMKFLWR stage.
Back up to three days from two last year, much like the weather, fans flooded the gates…
Reggae legend and “Uncle” to many, Don Carlos, brought the old-school reggae vibe back to the main stage while Ballyhoo! kept fans dancing across the venue. The Expendables' powerful set played on the Koi CBD Stage, as fans flocked to see Los Angeles-based Iya Terra spreading their message of love with traditional roots reggae on the SMKFLWR side stage. Next up was the always fun and fabulous Pepper on the Main Stage, who announced their plans for an afterparty at DiPiazza’s in Long Beach, followed by the Hawaiian roots music of Landon McNamara on the SMKFLWR Stage. To continue with the good island vibes were Mike Love and Tribal Seeds, who you can catch on the upcoming 311 Cruise along with Passafire, Day Two legends Fishbone and Day Three favorite Katastro.
Stick Figure then took to the Koi CBD Stage with Bret Bollinger of Pepper joining them on stage. Being the only female performer of the day, Bikini Trill served up high energy and great beats on the SMKFLWR Stage. Trevor Hall followed on the side stage, bringing his mix of roots and folk music blended with inspiration from his many trips to India. Be sure to look for the upcoming interview with Trevor, as well! The night closed out with the traditional ska-reggae sounds of The Delirians on the SMKFLWR stage, while fans huddled together to stay warm, singing along to the smooth sounds of Rebelution on the Koi CBD Stage.
Kaleo Wassman of Pepper took to the stage at DiPiazza’s in Long Beach for an afterparty with a special group of friends to celebrate the kick off of the 2019 One Love Cali Reggae Festival. Fans packed like sardines into the intimate venue to continue the good vibes felt all day at the Queen Mary. Joining Kaleo on stage were KBong of Stick Figure, Hirie, Evan from Through the Roots, Jacob of Tunnel Vision, festival newcomer Kyle Smith, his bass player Chris and drummer Scotty B, along with Louie Castle from Tribal Seeds. Hayden Hanson, singer for Tunnel Vision, joined the stage via crowd surfing! Stay tuned for Day Two and Three galleries to come.
