San Diego turns out for 311, Dirty Heads, Atmosphere, & Rome

San Diego doesn’t need much convincing to stretch summer a little further, especially when the plan involves live music under an open sky. In August 2026, 311 and Dirty Heads brought their So Glad You Made It Tour to North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, with Rome and Atmosphere rounding out the bill. Four acts and a warm evening made a convincing case for putting off the usual weeknight routine and braving the 805 South.
The lineup made sense without feeling repetitive.
Reggae and hip hop run through much of these artists’ work, but each approaches them differently. Rome’s voice, Atmosphere’s writing, Dirty Heads’ easygoing melodies, and 311’s heavier guitar work gave the evening room to move. Plus, this is an audience raised on Slightly Stoopid coming out of Ocean Beach and Tribal Seeds repping a few neighborhoods over, so a lineup like this was always attracts a full reggae scene turnout.
Rome kicked things off while half the crowd was still hiking in from the parking lots and the beer lines. He didn’t seem to mind. Rome’s easygoing reggae rock vibe gave early arrivals a chance to settle in with a familiar voice. After all those years fronting Sublime with Rome, it was cool to see him performing under his own name. Also, his history with Dirty Heads made him a fitting addition to the lineup; keep this in mind, because Rome wasn’t done for the night after the opening act.
Atmosphere followed with a set that put the focus on independent hip hop.
The Minneapolis duo’s music consists of Slug’s detailed writing and Ant’s production, with songs that leave room for everyday frustrations and uncomfortable self-reflection. You know, the good hip hop about real things. People were up at the rail rapping every word; you could tell a lot of folks bought their tickets just for Atmosphere.
Somewhere between Atmosphere and Dirty Heads, the sky just went off. Orange and pink streaked over the amphitheater — a perfect snap. I’ll admit, I pointed my camera away from the stage for a few frames, too. Locals get spoiled with these kind of sunsets down here, but this one earned true awe and applause.
Dirty Heads brought their Huntington Beach attitudes to SD, opening with “7 Seas” from their latest album of the same name. I’ve had that album on repeat (probably way too much), so hearing it first thing had me and the rest of the audience super fired up. Their visuals looked awesome, too, with as much to enjoy onscreen as the band onstage.
Jared Watson and Duddy B are a great one-two punch.
One’s rapping, one’s singing, trading back-and-forth like they’re just talking to each other while a tight rhythm section keeps it all rolling. It was chill enough for a bonfire at Fiesta Island, yet loud enough to reach the very back of the lawn. “My Sweet Summer” and “Vacation” felt pretty spot-on for a hot night a few miles north of the border. And, remember Rome? This is when he walked back out for “Lay Me Down” — Dirty Heads’ breakout single with Rome — and the place lost it. Seeing him open the show and then come back to do the single that launched both of their careers was a great full-circle moment.
311 closed this night, going straight for it with “Beautiful Disaster”, “All Mixed Up”, and “Come Original” right off the bat. Then came “Applied Science”, where drummer Chad Sexton launched into a massive solo; just when you thought it was over, the rest of the band grabbed sticks and piled on! It’s one of my favorite things to watch at a 311 show and the crowd, including plenty of fans wearing ‘days past 311’ shirts, went crazy while air-drumming along.
“Amber” mellowed it out a bit near the end before “Down” closed it out.
The two songs showed how much ground the band can cover, the slow sway of one giving way to the hard hit of the other. 311 knows exactly when to let you vibe and when to make you jump! What made this show special was the whole package: four acts, each with their own story, all on one stage in a town that’s always loved reggae, alt, and hip hop… plus, I can’t overstate that amazing sunset. Sure, it took forever to get out of the parking lot, but nobody cared. It was one of the best Wednesdays I’ve had all summer!
