Music to Move Your Soul
Las Vegas, the city that never sleeps, was alive with the pulse of music enthusiasts as SEMA Fest 2023 kicked off its first day in grand fashion. The air was electric, the excitement palpable, and the anticipation reached a fever pitch as fans flocked to the stages, eager to witness a diverse lineup that promised an unforgettable musical journey. While SEMA is all about cars and the car lifestyle, the heart of SEMA Fest itself was its two days of music, a carefully curated lineup featuring more than 20 diverse acts on two stages, showcasing a wide variety of musical genres. The festival-goers were treated to a musical journey that ranged from rock and alternative to hip-hop and pop.
The musical performances were split between the main stage and a smaller side stage. Both stages provided for some great shows, and I cannot say enough about just how good the sound was at the venue. One thing that I loved was how each show, no matter how packed the venue was, truly felt intimate. There was a great connection between most of the performers and the fans. Many of the bands took to the grounds following their sets to take in the spectacle and interacted with many fans. This is something you do not see often and just goes to show you how strong the bond is between music and car culture.

Kicking off the main stage festivities, Starcrawler brought a dose of unapologetic rock ‘n’ roll to SEMA Fest. Led by the magnetic Arrow de Wilde, whose stage presence and wild antics have become the stuff of legends, the band delivered a raw, high-voltage performance that harkened back to the heyday of punk and glam rock. Starcrawler’s music was a visceral, in-your-face experience, filled with blistering guitar riffs, thunderous rhythms, and de Wilde’s ferocious vocals that seems to defy the laws of gravity. Their set was electrifying, unpredictable, and undeniably entertaining, leaving those in attendance spellbound with their chaotic energy.

Seattle’s own Ayron Jones took the stage with a fiery set that showcased his raw talent and electrifying guitar prowess. His bluesy rock sound reverberated through the desert night, leaving an indelible mark on SEMA Fest 2023.
Wiz Khalifa
As the energy reached its peak, Wiz Khalifa brought his signature blend of rap and hip-hop to the desert stage. The crowd erupted into a sea of hands and swaying bodies as Wiz delivered a set that showcased his charismatic stage presence and chart-topping hits.
From the moment he emerged in a haze of smoke, Khalifa’s undeniable charisma seized the audience’s collective soul. Dressed in his laid-back style, the rapper effortlessly bridged the gap between performer and audience, creating an intimate connection that transcended the vast expanse of the venue.
Wiz Khalifa’s live performance wasn’t just a concert; it was a journey through the sonic landscapes of his prolific career. The setlist, a carefully curated blend of his chart-topping hits and deeper cuts, showcased Khalifa’s versatility as an artist. From the anthemic “Black and Yellow” to the introspective “See You Again,” each track was delivered with a magnetic energy that had the crowd hanging on every word. Backed by a stellar live band, Khalifa’s flow seamlessly intertwined with the dynamic instrumentation, creating a sonic tapestry that resonated with the diverse audience. In the heart of Las Vegas, Wiz Khalifa didn’t just perform; he orchestrated a euphoric symphony that will linger in the memories of fans long after the lights dimmed.
Chase Matthew
Closing the small stage on a high note, Chase Matthew delivered a high-energy performance that seamlessly blended pop and hip-hop influences. His charismatic stage presence and infectious beats ensured that the crowd left the Small Stage with a newfound appreciation for the rising star. Now, I do not hide my general dislike of country music. Not all of it, but a lot of it. Sorry, just not my scene. However, once in a while there is an artist who I find captures my attention and even makes me tap my feet and a bop my head up and down. Headlining the small stage on night one, Chase Matthew truly caught my attention. Matthew is a rising country star, who has quickly made a name for himself with his soulful voice, heartfelt lyrics, and a sound that effortlessly blends traditional country elements with a modern twist. His music resonates with authenticity, drawing from personal experiences and connecting with listeners on a deeply emotional level. With a genuine charm and down-to-earth persona, Matthew brought an approachable and relatable quality to the stage, making him a favorite of day one among fans seeking genuine storytelling through song. On stage he was dynamic and entertaining. He was directly engaged with the audience and just seemed like he was having as good a time on stage as the crowd was on the floor. As he continues to hone his craft and captivate audiences with his melodic tunes and evocative performances, Chase Matthew is a promising artist poised for a bright future in the world of country music. And you know what, I might just see him again.
Incubus
Closing out the night, Incubus delivered a masterclass in alternative rock. Brandon Boyd’s soulful vocals and the band’s tight instrumentation created a sonic journey that spanned their illustrious career. SEMA Fest 2023 reached its zenith as Incubus left the audience in awe, capping off a day that will be remembered as a monumental celebration of music in the heart of Las Vegas.
The synergy among the band members was undeniable, creating a tight-knit sonic tapestry that enveloped the crowd in a euphoric embrace. The visual spectacle accompanying the performance, from mesmerizing light displays to evocative projections, added an extra layer to the immersive experience. Incubus didn’t just play their songs; they curated a sonic and visual odyssey that resonated with the audience on a profound level. As the final chords reverberated through the desert night, it was evident that Incubus had not only conquered the stage but had left an indelible mark on SEMA Fest 2023 day one, solidifying their place as a timeless force in rock music.
The music wasn’t the only entertainment offered, uniquely, the stunts performed by the Nitro Circus crew was just insane! If you have never had a chance to watch these riders take to the air in person, you are truly missing out on a spectacle of straight up ice-cold courage. Watching them throw around several hundred pound motorcycles while 50 feet in the air is just crazy. Of course, not to be outdone, were the drivers on both the Formula Drift course and the crew from Hoonigan, including the legendary Travis Pastrana. Watching these drivers push 1000+ horsepower cars around obstacles and corners with absolute precision was something to behold. The massive amounts of burning rubber smoke was straight up brutal and filled the air for hours.
SEMA Fest 2023 brought a unique blend of music and motors together for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Day two coming up next!
