Wet Leg wields insane energy on Nashville’s Marathon Music Works
Tuesday night in Nashville can be one of two things: mundane and routine or out-of-this-world and chaotic. On the one hand, you have the predictable crowds of tourists infesting Broadway like roaches under a refrigerator and, on the other, you have an event randomly pop up that blows the minds of true music fans in the Music City. Wet Leg at Marathon Music Works was definitely a mind-blowing experience on a Tuesday night.
Mary In the Junkyard started things off, playing a more mellow set with the type of songs you would put on while studying for an exam. Their sound and style was vastly different than what lay ahead with Wet Leg; an interesting juxtaposition. One highlight was when the bass player put down her bass and played a violin!
Hanna Vu would be the next artist to perform; I have been in love with her song “Hammer” and, much to my surprise, she opened her set with it. After that, I was also left confused as to why she was an opener. She definitely ‘rocked’ harder than the previous band, but it still seemed an interesting match. Vu’s set was entertaining enough but it left me extremely hungry to see Wet Leg’s energy.
“Put your mouth to mine // Give me CPR”!
The chorus of the latest in a string of hits from Wet Leg rang out throughout Marathon Music Works. To be honest, I felt as if the entire set was a collection of sing-along songs. “Catch These Fists”, “Chaise Lounge”, “Davina McCall”, and others weren’t just sung by lead singer Rhain, but screamed by mostly everyone in attendance. This band keeps the energy high through their entire set and didn’t let off the gas until they were forced to end the show because of the 11 o’clock curfew. I was so captivated by this band that I frantically tried to figure out if they had one more show in a 500-mile radius of Nashville. If you have a chance please go see Wet Leg, they are one of the most captivating and fun bands that I have seen in a long while.
