50 years of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ hits the road

I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey…

It’s hard to imagine the cinematic release of Richard O’Brien’s eccentric stage musical is turning 50. Talk about a “Time Warp”! The Rocky Horror Picture Show might just be the greatest cult classic of all time. It’s sexually liberating and gender-bending, themes well beyond its time, scoffing at convention through the fever dream, fictional world of Dr. Frank-N-Furter… and many equally bizarre musical numbers.

Rocky Horror is the longest-running theatrical release in film history, with daily screenings still being held around the world to this day. The film is the first to go interactive with its audiences, with live screenings (featuring shadow casts, props, and costumes) allow viewers to live out the narrative as it unfolds onscreen. If you’ve never been to one of these ‘midnight movies’, interactions include throwing rice at the opening wedding scene, twirling noise makers in the lab, and firing off squirt guns when Janet and Brad walk in the rain towards Frank-N-Furter’s castle.

Pro tip: if you don’t want to get wet, make sure to bring a newspaper to hold overhead.

On top of many other tributes and special events, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is about to hit the road to celebrate a half century — complete with original cast members! Stopping in 55 cities across US and Canada, Rocky Horror fans can “come up to the lab and see what’s on the slab” via The Spectacular Tour, starting on September 23rd in Huntsville, Alabama. With appearances from Barry Bostwick (aka, ‘Brad Majors’), Nell Campbell (aka, Columbia), and Patricia Quinn (aka, Magenta), Rock Horror-heads have the opportunity to not only get in on an audience participation version of the movie on the big screen, but also meet and greet the cast, snag exclusive memorabilia, and even win costume contests!

If that wasn’t enough, the man, the myth, the transexual doctor himself — Mr. Tim Curry — is on the bill for the November 2nd Anaheim tour stop.

“It’s not easy having a good time”… but in this instance, it would be harder not to.

Tickets for this extra special, celebrity-studded Spectacular Tour are now available online, with details for each city listed below. Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the original unedited film like never before. It’s OK if you shiver with antici… PATION!
