Austin, Texas is known for its diverse musical inhabitants, with up-and-coming bands in every genre gaining more and more momentum every day. One band combining classic cumbia with new wave and indie rock is Como Las Movies — a quartet with a ‘Nuevo Wave’ sound. Following an EP with the same title, Como Las Movies premieres their latest track “¿YPQSP?” today on Top Shelf Music before it hits digital outlets tomorrow!
With a spooky-meets-space-age synthy intro, the track unwinds with a sweet Spanish melody.
With a spooky-meets-space-age synthy intro, the track unwinds with a sweet Spanish melody. Even if you are foreign to the language, you can tell that the song is about contemplating the virtues, either in yourself or of another. At first, lead singer Nelson Valente Aguilar sounds assured, sincere; the next thing you know, the tonality flips to contemplative, anxious. With an extended instrumental outro with a walking guitar solo, this new track embodies the old world meeting the new — post punk meets traditional cumbia.
Aguilar comments, “As I was humming melodies while listening to the instrumental the lyrics ‘quiero dormir, quiero volar repartir mil abrazos’ popped up. This idea of ‘sleeping, dreaming, soaring through the sky and wanting to give a thousand hugs’ was refreshing; I felt like I was reconnecting with my childhood.” He continues, “Sonically and lyrically, ‘¿YPQSP?’ captures a bit of that childhood feeling where summers seemed to last forever and it was safe to dream without a care in the world.”
