Let’s have a chat about a band that needs to be heard across the country and then some, IRIEspect. This rad seven-piece energetic band blends Cali and Caribbean styles — we’re talking hip hop, Latin, and new and old-school dub rock reggae. They are an extravagant bunch who blow it out of the water with authentic stage presence, enticing fans across the nation.
In 2024, IRIEspect released their first full-length LP via Dubshot Records, leveling it up with a heavy-hitting, sold-out Brooklyn Bowl show supporting Steel Pulse. Other memorable appearances have been with the likes of Collie Buddz, Pepper, Badfish, Tropidelic, among other big names in the American and island reggae scenes. These bad boys have hella support, from their label Dubshot flying in Skygrass straight from Jamaica to the collabs with Ras Ajai from Sean Paul‘s label, Dutty Rock, Alific, and Kyle Bell. The accolades for this band are expansive, so let’s get down to business, shall we?
IRIEspect dropped a pretty damn good album for the masses.
The first track off the debut, “Blasting”, drops it like it’s hot with beach reggae vibes all the way. “Children” then embraces innocence, urging listeners to cherish and protect our youth. This song will give you chill bumps. “La Cocina” is an excellent collaboration with Ras Ajai; if you’re not dancing and moving to the reggae-Latin flavor, OH MY. Get your life together. Next up is “Strong Island”, beginning with seagulls squawking in the background before flowing into a rhythimic, oceanic vibe. This song is my favorite on the album, as it rocks with high-power voltage reggae beats. “Realize” radiates sunshine and waves of ambiance, while “Legal”, featuring F.A.M.E., takes listeners on a journey through reggae roots, showing mad respect for the ganja.
“IRIE Tikiland” soars through trippy experimental dance elements that weave together to create a truly hypnotic island melody. “All Apologies” encapsulate the nostalgia, infusing reggae into the very famous Nirvana song. IRIEspect’s love for rock and reggae history is absolutely refreshing. “Good Good Lovin” is an absolute lovemaking song to get down to with your sweet honey on a warm summer night! (Ideas, anyone??)
“Tonight” featuring Kyle Bell is bound to be a reggae rock fan-favorite.
The energy is enticing with this banger, all coming together with strong danceability. “La Morena” then completes the album — a fun collaboration with Juan Jurado. This fantastic track spotlights the diversity IRIEspect has cultivated and then some. Go check this band out on tour, as they’re on the up and up!
