MisterWives got Nashville sweating over unparalleled high-energy performance

It was another night of what I like to call “musical mystery theater” here in Nashville, Tennessee. This time, I headed over to Brooklyn Bowl to catch rising indie rock band joan, who just so happened to be opening for MisterWives. I call it a mystery because, before attending, I hadn’t really listened to any of the bands on the bill. Sure, I knew of MisterWives by reputation, but I’d never given their music a deep dive. Still, based on the caliber of artists Brooklyn Bowl typically hosts, I had a feeling it would be a great night of music.

As I walked into the venue, the first act, Juliana Madrid, was already on stage. This marked my second time seeing Juliana this year, though I wasn’t aware she’d be on the lineup until showtime. Juliana’s sound blends indie rock with hints of pop. Normally, she performs with a full band, but tonight it was just her and her electric guitar. Her music, in my opinion, evokes a bit of Sheryl Crow, though with fewer country influences.

Next up was joan, an exciting new band out of Arkansas.

From the moment they took the stage, it was as if they floored the gas pedal—each song becoming more danceable than the last.

In many ways, they reminded me of Walk the Moon, though with fewer synths. While I wouldn’t say they sound exactly like Walk the Moon, they have a similarly infectious energy that makes the entire crowd start moving. One particularly unique moment was when the drummer and bassist swapped roles mid-set. I’m not sure why they did it, but it was a fun twist. Joan is one of those bands you just know has that “it” factor—the little something extra that sets them apart from the sea of talented musicians. Their latest single, “heartbodymindsoul,” is absolutely killer, and I highly recommend checking it out.

As for MisterWives, my only previous exposure to them was their collaboration with PVRIS on the song “Vultures.” Beyond that, I was relatively unfamiliar with their catalog. However, I’ve been lucky enough to see many dynamic front-women over the years—performers like Lindsey Stirling, Hayley Williams, and Lady Gaga.

After seeing MisterWives live, I can confidently say that few can match the sheer energy and charisma of their lead singer, Mandy Lee.

It was as if she were leading a high-energy workout class. I have no idea where she gets her energy, but it felt like she never stopped moving throughout the entire set. Over the next hour, MisterWives delivered a masterclass in live performance and crowd engagement. Toward the end of their set, they even brought out Nashville rock legend Charlotte Sands to join them for their latest single, “Otherside.” It was the perfect way to cap off a night of unforgettable performances.
