The out of sight, immersive Brassroots District LA ’74 experience

I was born in 1989. I missed the 70s (and, let’s face it, the entire 80s) completely. I’ve heard both decades were a wild time, though, especially from my mother who never quite left the party. But that’s another story. What I’m trying to say is, experiencing the 70s for me entails watching the likes of Boogie Nights or Almost Famous at home, or going to a disco-themed festival or party. Believe me, us Millennials love a good themed party…

Simply put: the 70s is a fabled time I’ll never get to experience firsthand.

Or so I thought. Imagine a night of no phones (don’t panic, you get them back). A night where everyone is dressed in their best 70s threads — we’re talking flower patterns, bell bottoms, feathers, sequins. People all around you are throwing phrases like “ya dig?” and “far out” naturally into conversations… and did I mention no one is on their phones?

This is the world of Brassroots District: a concert-meets-theater experience where the band is about to sign a record deal in front of their fans — and you’re part of the show! The year is 1974 and popular funk band Brassroots District is celebrating a record release, a milestone they’ve worked so hard for. But not everything is as groovy it seems…

Before the concert starts up and the drama unfolds, you’re welcomed into Gem’s apartment. A bad, foxy mama, Gem lays down some “house rules” before ushering you into the main venue… unless you’ve sprung for VIP passes, in which you get to meet-and-greet Brassroots lead singers (and lovers) Ursa Major and Copper before they take the stage.

With a bar situated at the back of the club, attendees get to mix and mingle with key players planted in the audience while the funkadelic band starts up onstage (with original music, no less!). Hopefully, you wore your dancing shoes.

Or, perhaps you need a breather?

In that case, you can keep on steppin’ back over to Gem’s pad, where a space cadet fan wants to take you on a freaky deaky trip. Or you can chat up Gem, who’s holding down the crib while the band gets down next door. And don’t mind the reporter trying to get the skinny! He’s here to have a good time.. unless you have the lowdown.

It’s a true choose-your-own-adventure, where actors and musicians are converging with their audience in real time. It’s getting thrown into the trials and tribulations of a band trying to make it big in a dog-eat-dog industry. It’s dancing to a soundtrack packed to the brim with boogie.

And it’s off the hook.

The original run for this unbelievably immersive show was from late February 2026 through early March… but, due to popular demand, Brassroots District LA ’74 got a well-deserved extension to keep on truckin’ through May 17th! So, if you’re in the downtown Los Angeles area over the next few weeks, do yourself a solid and grab tickets be a part of this experiential masterpiece. As a born theater kid, who’s covered live music professionally for over 15 years, I know brilliance when I see it. Spend an evening with Brassroots District — and don’t forget to grab the physical LP and other merch before you leave!
