Lake Street Dive lets Nashville know they’re “Good Together”

Approximately 10 years ago, while living in central New York, I discovered a band called Lake Street Dive through friends who typically attended jam band shows. These friends were the type who would have followed the Grateful Dead if they had the time. They enthusiastically recommended that I check out Lake Street Dive and I made the mistake of assuming they were a jam band because their initials are LSD. Fast forward another year or so and I was sent a YouTube video of lead singer Rachael Price performing a one-take version of a song called “Nobody Knows”. I immediately realized my error; it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I had ever heard. I quickly immersed myself in the rest of the band’s catalog and have been a fan ever since.

This past Saturday, I had the immense pleasure of finally seeing this amazing band perform live during their Good Together Tour stop in Nashville.

The opening act of the night was The Lemon Twigs, a New York-based band that reminded me of The Beatles, but with a slightly edgier sound. I had heard of them before, but it was great to finally see them perform live. They played for about 45 minutes and the crowd seemed to really enjoy their set. I felt they were a perfect complement to Lake Street Dive. Unfortunately, due to the venue rules and regulations, all photographers were forced to sit in a side stage area and we were limited to hearing them from a distance. During the three songs I did get to watch, they were full of energy and were having a great time onstage.

Lake Street Dive took over for the evening after that, immediately broking into their latest hit, “Good Together”. Rachael’s powerful and soulful voice had the crowd going wild. She wore a gold shimmery dress that glittered every time she spun around and grabbed her microphone. As the night wore on, each band member took turns addressing the crowd and hyping each other up. The drummer and keyboardist seemed to have the most active and hilarious banter, continuously making jokes and laughing with each other. Lake Street’s keyboard player Akie Bermiss performed an incredible cover of the Shania Twain hit “Still the One”. It was so unique in its soulful rendition that I am sure Shania would be proud.

In all, the show was an amazing blend of danceable soul music and power ballads. Sadly, my favorite song “What I’m Doing Here” was not part of their setlist, but I can imagine they might be tired of playing it live at this point. Lake Street Dive put on one of the best performances I’ve seen all year and I highly recommend any of our readers check out one of the remaining tour dates! However, be sure to act fast, because many of their upcoming shows are already sold out.
