The event of the year for reggae lovers happens every Memorial Weekend in Monterey, California, and for those who have never been to the California Roots Music and Arts Festival, the 8th Annual is shaping up to be looking pretty good thus far. Over the past seven years, Cali Roots has become more than just a familial performing arts get-together; no, the festival has morphed into something far beyond that. California Roots might be one of the last pure giant music festivals in existence, where artists and attendees walk amongst each other, where lifelong friendships are made, where there is a constant feeling of elation (whether you are sober or not). You can't find that anywhere else.
Over the past seven years, Cali Roots has become more than just a familial performing arts get-together
And, every year, the line-up keeps getting better and better. Back during the first couple Cali Roots events, there was only one main stage with a second side stage inside what is now one of the VIP lounges. Now, the festival has grown to be super-sized, allowing the Monterey Fairgrounds Bowl Stage to open for the first time since the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival (you know, the one where Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire. Oh, you weren't there for that? Well, Jacob of SOJA reenacted it during the first night of California Roots 2014). Needless to say, the Bowl Stage is continuing to grow in rich music history with every passing year, and you will definitely want to be in Monterey this May 26th–28th . As of now, the 8th Annual California Roots line-up contains 26 artists – and there's still more to fit the bill! Some artists are repeats from previous years, but for the first time ever, not only is one of the biggest names in hip hop headlining, but also is a brand new artist to the fest. That's right, Nas will be closing down one of the three nights! NAS, people. Just when you thought Cali Roots couldn't get any better, they go and do a thing like that… More artists in the second round announcement include Cali Roots veterans SOJA, Iration, Stick Figure, Nahko and Medicine for the People, Protoje, Easy Star All-Stars, Passafire, Yellowman, Jah9, RDGLDGRN, Six60, Ballyhoo!, and Synrgy.
With all the amazing artists just listed, don't forget that they join the first-round bands that were revealed back in October! Also signed on for Cali Roots 2017 is Dirty Heads, Jurassic 5, Common Kings, Alborosie, Anthony B, Jesse Royal, Mellow Mood, Through the Roots, Tribal Theory, Humble Soul, Iya Terra, and The Late Ones. If you're not sold on going already, keep in mind that the final Cali Roots announcement is planned for after the New Year on January 10th. Early advance general admission three-day passes are now available, and VIP packages are sure to follow. California Roots is an all-ages, on-site camping, Earth conscious experience, so please be conscientious of the fairgrounds while you're there!
