Journey takes San Diego to the Final Frontier & beyond

Arena rock legends Journey brought their Final Frontier Tour to San Diego’s legendary Sports Arena (now known as Pechanga Arena) on September 14th, 2026, celebrating five decades of memorable music on their extended farewell tour. Founding member and lead guitarist Neal Schon led the current incarnation of the band on a two-and-a-half-hour trip down memory lane. Fans did not have to dig too far back into their memory banks, though, as most of these songs have remained in the forefront of music and pop culture since they hit the airwaves.

The set list focused primarily on the Steve Perry era, which ran from 1978’s Infinity album through 1996’s Trial By Fire. Lead vocalist Arnel Pineda has been brilliantly singing these classics since Schon found YouTube videos of his Filipino band covering the songs. By the time Journey plays Stagecoach Festival in 2027, Pineda will have spent 20 years fronting the band!

Keyboardist, guitarist, and vocalist Jonathan Cain took a moment to describe his own origin story.

It turns out that his first show with The Babys (featuring John Waite) was right in the same venue, opening for Journey. He thanked Perry and Schon for tapping him as Gregg Rolie’s replacement in 1980, just in time to help write and record their breakthrough album Escape. Seven of the 10 tracks off that mega-classic were played, as well as half of its follow up, Frontiers.

Drummer Deen Castronovo has been playing with Journey for most of this century. He also has an incredible voice, which was showcased as he took over lead vocals on five songs during this show, teaming up with Cain on two of them. Keyboardist Jason Derlatka also took lead for three of the deeper cuts, while bassist Todd Jensen contributed stellar backing vocals throughout the evening.

Beyond the band, the San Diego stop brought grade-A spectacle.

Giant video screens moved between graphics and closeups of each band member performing, ensuring that every seat had a great view. There was a drum solo, a piano solo, a guitar solo. Several songs were extended to allow for additional soloing and jamming. Pineda toured the arena floor while the band took “Wheel in the Sky” to another level, jamming with a heavy metal vibe as fireballs shot up from the stage. By the time the confetti flew for the final song, the crowd had experienced an emotional roller coaster of extreme rock and roll.

There are not many venues left in the world that actually have a musical history. As new venues continue to be built, Pechanga Arena is still standing strong. The concourse is full of photographs of artists that graced the arena stage — Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Rush, Van Halen, Metallica, Nirvana, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi. The building added further authenticity to a classic rock show that felt modern and current. As generations of fans left the building, voices strained from singing along, with smiles on their faces, they were reminded of just how much fun a live rock show can be.
