Goldenvoice, the leading west coast festival name, loves to continually spice things up. It seems every year, Goldenvoice organizes and carries out novel weekends of music with varying themes. Tropicalia Festival in Long Beach highlights Latino acts; One Love Cali Reggae Festival in the same location revolves around the finest in reggae rock; Camp Flog Gnaw is the quintessential hip hop hay-day. All of the aforementioned festivals are in their fledgling stages compared to Goldenvoice’s staple events — Coachella and Stagecoach. Chances are you’ve been to one or more GV event, whether you realize it or not.
The lineup GV presented yesterday for Cruel World Fest encompasses a post-punker’s utmost existence.
In between these annual extravaganzas are one-day events: some become annual, some are one-time only. Last year, Goldenvoice hosted Pasadena Daydream Festival, a vision brought to life by Cure frontman Robert Smith. Naturally, the lineup consisted of a myriad of post-punk bands, both old and new, headlined by The Cure at night. Lady Gaga purportedly enjoyed side stage, tweeting her exaltation as Smith serenaded the masses. In this vein, GV presents a new New Wave festival for 2020 entitled Cruel World to hit Los Angeles on Saturday, May 2nd.
Who to top The Cure when it comes to New Wave music? Well, Morrissey, of course. The lineup GV presented yesterday for Cruel World Fest encompasses a post-punker’s utmost existence. This rundown is EVERYTHING. What would alternative music be today without the influence of The Smiths, Blondie, DEVO and so many more? Brace yourself, this Cruel World lineup is entirely for the weak of heart: Morrissey, Bauhaus, Echo & The Bunnymen, Blondie, DEVO, The Psychedelic Furs, Violent Femmes, The Church, English Beat, Public Image Ltd., Gary Numan, Marc Almond and She Wants Revenge… excited, yet? But, wait, the openers are also epic: Blaqk Audio, TR/ST, Cold Cave, Jay Asten’s Gene Loves Jezebel, Berlin, Bad Manners, Missing Persons, London After Midnight, Drab Majesty, 45 Grave, Christian Death, The Meteors, Black Marble, Sextile, Softkill and The KVB complete it all. To be honest, the only names missing are The Cure, New Order and Depeche Mode. There’s always room for next year.
