KROQ presents two weekends of Hermosa Beach Summer Series

There’s not a lot that beats free summer fun. The season is entertaining enough, let alone when your local community comes together in a block party, combining music with comedy with film with art with exercise. How could all of this fit into one weekend you ask? And, free of charge? Turn’s out, Los Angeles heralded radio station KROQ is bringing the Hermosa Beach Summer Series back to the Orange County shoreline this month, expanding two full weekends this year! Let that sink in for a minute… a two weekend festival, chock full of activities, for absolutely nothing out of pocket. God bless America.

Beginning the weekend of August 17th and 18th, the Hermosa Beach Summer Series will bring all genres of music together on the performance stage, with comedian Jamie Kennedy (of Malibu’s Most Wanted, et. Al) spouting comedic genius alongside LA indie rock band The Wrecks. Headlining the inaugural night will be LA-meets-NY alt rock duo The Score, replacing Atlas Genius who was previously scheduled to perform. Looks like Atlas Genius is gonna miss out. Also appearing that Saturday is alternative band Kitten, as well as Orange County-based Your Favorite Color. Cap your evening off with the beachfront screening of North Shore, a beachy cult film fave circa 1987.

The good times continue for Weekend One Day Two, as local School of Rock students kick off the music stage next to morning yoga participants. Make sure to show up early to support these aspiring musicians! A little too early for you? The South Bay Brew Ha Ha beer garden will be whipping up brunch onsite, with beer tastings and deejay sets throughout the entire event. As this is a free event, make sure to spring for your beer tasting tickets ahead of time! Not a beer drinker? The Summer Series’ exclusive wine partner Caduceus Cellars/Merkin Vineyards offers award-winning wine all weekend, a company founded by Maynard James Keenan (frontman of Tool, A Perfect Circle). Add some live music to your libations with LA rock band The Jacks, Columbus-based pop rock trio The Orphan The Poet and closing down weekend one is the exclusive reunion show of Iglu & Hartley: a band dubbed by UK magazine NME as one of “20 Bands Making America Great Again” back in 2008.

Although the festivities grind to a halt for the work week, Summer Series attendees and local residents are invited to partake in Monday’s community beach cleanup from 7-9am (an excursion that also takes place at the same hour slots on every festival day morning following August 17th). The Summer Series starts back up the morning of August 24th, with LA’s The White Buffalo headlining! Comedy of Steve Byrne takes centerstage (of Chappelle’s Show, Sullivan & Son), making attendees LOL in between music performances from alt surf-rock band Pounded By The Surf and LA’s Trapdoor Social. Like the weekend prior, Summer Series attendees can cool off at night to a movie screening although which one is yet to be determined! Cast your vote on what you want to watch here.

Like all great things, Hermosa Beach Summer Series 2019 comes to an end on August 25th (but, not without a bang). Voted Denver’s best in reggae, openers Lola Rising will be christening the Sunday stage, followed by rockabilly band Gamblers Mark and three-time GRAMMY-nominated reggae band Wailing Souls, celebrating 50 years in the business this summer! Closing it all down will be none other than Mariachi El Bronx (aka, the Latin-infused alter ego of indie rock band The Bronx). What a family-friendly, free, fantastic time to come together in Hermosa.

Can’t wait to start the party? Lucky for you NEFT Vodka is hosting “The Local Road To Hermosa” pre-party at Tower 12 on the night of August 11th, with reggae performances by Ital Vibes, Lola Rising and Johnny Luv. Did we mention that it’s also free??
