Summer isn’t over with the onset of September, especially not in the small town of Guerneville, California from the 12th through the 14th. Tucked away nicely on the Russian River above San Francisco and deep in wine country near the world-renowned Korbel Winery, is Guerneville Lodge – or the birthplace of reggae’s three-day Unity Festival. In comparison to hot deserts or sandy beaches, there’s nothing like Sonoma County’s grassy, green atmosphere to bring out the eco-loving, spiritual vibe of a reggae festival!
Even though stocked with reggae’s finest, the Unity Festival boasts that it’s not all about the music
This year, the Unity Festival team is bringing Yellowman front and center on the main stage, as well as Easy Star All Stars, New Kingston, Tribal Theory, One Drop, CRSB, Krooked Treez, Clear Conscience, Mystic Roots, Ezzrah, IrieFuse, One A Chord, Papafish, Black Bottom Lighters, Dewey and the Peoples, Riotmaker, Blaze Mob, Iya Terra, Tatanka, Mellow Movement, Lucid Lion, A La Lune and Skunk-Dub. Whatever musical style you’re into besides reggae, there’s certainly a band within the festival’s extensive and varietal line-up that incorporates it into their persona.
Even though stocked with reggae’s finest, the Unity Festival boasts that it’s not all about the music: it’s also about a celebration of the sacred and “energizing the human spirit” via music, dance, art and education. Education is a particularly integral part of the event, for the festival wants to aid its concert-goers in awareness to the world around them. Workshops and presentations on stewardship, green living, renewable energy and alternative healing are just a sample of the topics of discussion over the weekend’s procession. The festival is also placing high emphasis on the youth of America by donating all proceeds to the St. Jude Research Hospital for Kids and the Sane Sart Courage Center for abused children among other charities. Since the Unity Festival places such priority on helping children in need, the event is also for all ages to attend.
Camping passes, three-day and single-day passes are still available for online purchasing, so grab the sun block, the kids, the acoustic instruments and the camping gear for last minute fun in the sun at the Unity Festival before the fall season!
