Double Tiger, aka Jay Spaker, is back in action premiering lead single “Drop Sound” off his forthcoming album today on Top Shelf Music before it hits digital outlets tomorrow! The song is the first to surface from sophomore album, The Journey, a much-anticipated follow-up to his debut solo venture Sharp & Ready, both off Easy Star Records. Spanning 13 tracks and available December 11th, The Journey showcases Spaker’s musical maturity as a solo artist while his main guitar gig in John Brown’s Body continues its musical hiatus.
Double Tiger is ready to pounce in “Drop Sound”, detailing the first steps in a much longer ‘Journey’.
And, what a journey it has been. Double Tiger elaborates in The Journey the obstacles he’s had to face in his personal life since his debut album, including a transcontinental move from his home state of New York to the city of Los Angeles. After being immersed in California culture, Spaker combines east and west sounds easily into a perfect blend of the coasts, recording The Journey after relocating once more back to Ithaca to care for his father who unfortunately passed in August of this year. It’s thus been a tumultuous few years for Double Tiger, not to mention COVID-19 affecting the globe and the current catastrophic state of the music industry.
Spaker speaks on the album’s intention: “I am very privileged to make music and believe in its power to heal and bring folks together. This last year has been powerfully transformative with my father’s passing, COVID, etc., so having this album finally [coming] out in the world is a blessing and I would like to dedicate this one to Pops.”
First up, “Drop Sound” featuring the talents of Slightly Stoopid. The single is solemn, yet upbeat, laidback, yet determined. Elements of reggae rock and hip hop combine: the west coast colliding with the east colliding with the far east with an almost sitar sound echoing throughout the track. It’s quite impressive. We’re “comin’ to your area”, around the world and “across the U.S.A.”, Double Tiger chants, as Slightly Stoopid’s melodic harmonies reverberate on top. Touring the world and back is nothing compared to helping the public in times of crisis through artistry.
Music is sacred and musicians are mere prophets for the people.
