Matt Pond PA reveals “A Pillar Of Salt” socially-distant video
For over a decade, duo Matt Pond and Chris Hanson has serenaded the world under the moniker Matt Pond PA. Now, along with the rest of the music world, the two artists had to pivot their platform back in March when the world was shaken with the rampant COVID-19 pandemic. Matt Pond PA took to digital sources to share their music back and forth, rendering a beautiful EP, stemmed from quarantine and racial tension, entitled Songs Of Disquiet — out August 7th! The eight-song EP not only delivers some much needed solace through a mixture of originals and covers, but further aids musicians in need with all Bandcamp profits going to the Save The Music Foundation. That’s right — all proceeds to charity!
Two of the features on the EP are modern renditions of The Thermals’ 2006 song “A Pillar Of Salt” — one “(Still)” and one “(Stirred)” featuring the talents of Anya Marina. The new socially-distant video directed and edited by Ryan Harrington is of the latter “(Stirred)” version, bringing together via Zoom call Matt Pond PA with Marina, as well as renowned comedians Nikki Glaser, Andrew Collin and Ian Fidance of BrooklynVegan.
As the upbeat single unwinds, all parties dance, strip and bicycle ride in their respective homes, proffering a great show for an audience in any mood.
Matt Pond PA comments on the video collaboration:
“At the beginning of this year, I was helping manage Nikki Glaser’s theater tour, featuring Andrew Collin and Anya Marina. It was a dream to watch these insanely talented people perform across the country (while constantly mocking me). The truth often gets glossed over in the flood of social media, but they are all brilliant lunatics with huge hearts. The shows reinstilled a faith in my gut to keep rocking and a desire to finish our next album and eventually get back on the road.
“Then, things changed. But, there’s still hope. Nikki, Andrew, Anya, as well as their cycling sidekick, Ian Fidance, showed me that the isolation is mostly in my mind. And, I believe them. More than anything, I know someday we will all rock together again. YESSS! ‘A Pillar of Salt’ by The Thermals has resonated with me since it was first released in the aughts. I remember disappearing into my headphones — time after time on tour after tour — to help me renew a faded sense of self and waltz in a distant mental state, where good always prevails over evil.”
Well, you can’t get a better description of the single than that. Watch the video above and look out for Matt Pond PA’s Songs Of Disquiet EP hitting all digital outlets on August 8th, 2020.
