Rebelution at San Diego’s North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre

Chula Vista concerts are a trademark of summertime. The weather is finally warm enough to enjoy an outdoor event, strangers mingle amongst each other with drinks on the lawn, friends bond in every direction by the sheer act of live music. A concert arena that has boasted many names, The North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre holds 20,500… and on Rebelution night, it seemed close to capacity.

San Diego residents began the evening by tailgating in the parking lot, downing their store-bought libations before hustling inside for the soulful sounds of Durand Jones & The Indications. Rebelution hits and reggae classics were echoing from car radios, parking lot games like beer pong and corn hole were in full swing and it seemed like everyone was adorning Reb merchandise. San Diego loves their reggae rock.

Durand Jones, a funky RnB twist from the reggae lineup, absolutely stole the hearts of early bird attendees before reggae revivalist Protoje played direct support. The sun had just finished setting by the time the Jamaican legend launched into his first song, making way for a fantastic night. The almost full moon illuminated the backdrop as Protoje recited catchy song after song. Being a reggae rock city, many were pleased to learn Protoje’s music and beyond, especially with DJ Mackle spinning only the greatest in up-and-coming reggae acts between sets. The scene has such diversity if you look into it.

Last, but certainly not least, the men of the hour closed down the night. Rebelution called back out not only openers Durand Jones and the Indications, but Protoje as well to take over lead vocals on two tracks. That only amplified the communal vibes Reb brings to the stage. As cheers rang out from an overwhelming crowd, Rebelution ran through their encore before thanking the crowd for the night, everyone pleased with their performance.
