Chicago’s summer festival calendar is heating up, with a notable one happening over Memorial Day Weekend. Titled Warm Love Cool Dreams Music and Arts Festival, this carefully curated two-day event promises merriment for indie music-lovers in the Windy City, taking over Chicago’s iconic Salt Shed on May 23th and 24th.
Presented by the team behind the beloved sister venue, The Empty Bottle, the festival champions boundary-pushing artists. That idea of discovery is front-and-center in this year’s lineup, too, balancing globally recognized names with some of the most compelling voices emerging from the underground indie scene.
Headlining the weekend is Australian indie favorite Courtney Barnett, whose sharp lyricism and laidback style have made her a defining voice of modern guitar music. She’s directly supported by Toro y Moi, the ever-evolving project of Chaz Bear (known for weaving together chillwave roots with funk, indie rock, and electronic experimentation), and The Jesus and Mary Chain (bringing their iconic blend of distortion and melody to the forefront).

Chicago’s own music scene is well-represented this year, with post-rock pioneers Tortoise, indie-pop staples Whitney, and dark electronic outfit Pixel Grip all set to appear. Artists like Nourished By Time, Smerz, YHWH Nailgun, and Kumo 99 showcase the festival’s commitment to genre fluidity, while performers such as Mark William Lewis, Moin, Being Dead, Lauren Auder, and Tobacco City add depth and unpredictability to the bill.
