Saturday, October 20th marked the last stop on the travelling tour known as Scallywag Fest (or Ye Scallywag to some). Punk and ska promotion with the classy touch of craft beer, Scallywag cycles around in the fall, hitting cities such as Denver, Auburn and more. San Diego brought up the Scallywag caboose, yet boasted an impressive lineup from first draught pour to finish, with the deliciously sudsy start of free beer tastings from noon to 3pm.
San Diego brought up the Scallywag caboose, yet boasted an impressive lineup from first draught pour to finish…
Once the beer tents took a breather, Beach Goons took the stage to kickoff the musical portion of the day. The ska had commenced and the pit was plentiful. Next up was new ska sensation The Interrupters, a band which most had yet to see live and a friendly reminder (or middle finger) that ska is far from dead.
Less Than Jake took the stage following The Interrupters’ all star performance, shooting toilet paper out of guns alongside a spongey cartoon mascot parading around stage. It was something out of a comic book. As the sun began to make its descent west over the ocean, just adjacent from The Embarcadero’s Waterfront Park, reggae-ska San Diegan band Hepcat entertained the masses before Boston’s Mighty Mighty Bosstones took the energy into the night!
Rancid, being masters of both ska and punk realms, rocked the ravenous crowd all the way to the end. Until next year’s wave of punk bands are announced, Scallywag 2018 scales the likes of other ska fests by sticking to its core values: beer, beats and debauchery.
