Atlanta producer prodigy Piper Street Sound, aka the one-man talents of Matt Mansfield, brings more infectious dub reggae to the public with his forthcoming EP release, Small Plate / Rid Them. Two tracks, each done three ways, Piper Street Sound lays the dub track beautifully in both instances, with friends like Addis Pablo (Augustus Pablo’s son), John Arthur Brown and Pitufo (of Plu Con Pla) lending their contributions seamlessly over the base. With the release of the EP on the horizon, Piper Street Sound debuts its latter half with “Rid Them” — the first half already released earlier this year. Thus completes the EP and solidifies Piper Street Sound’s heightened credibility in dub reggae music.
Trumpet, normally declaring its presence in any composition, is surprisingly subtle and subdued throughout the track… buried in the weight of the trombones as they blare.
Horn heavy, the groovy “Rid Them” single has a funky bass, a playful bubble organ and a mischievous guitar. Trombone takes centerstage in a solo before leading to a muted double trombone/tenor sax bridge — and, lest we forget trumpet! Trumpet, normally declaring its presence in any composition, is surprisingly subtle and subdued throughout the track… buried in the weight of the trombones as they blare. Mixed by Mansfield, the final result is one proffering an aggressive timbre, action over indifference. Yet, it isn’t unsettling. Quite the contrary, which spurs John Arthur Brown’s spoken word version to follow on the EP. Poetic and infused with calls to action, Brown’s version is then relinquished to Pitufo’s uplifting Marimba rendition of the dub. Reminiscent of the Caribbean, Pitufo’s marimba echoes reverberate down your central nervous system before transporting you psychologically to an island far, far away. Three different songs; one dub. Piper Street Sound has mastered his craft once again.
