It has been just over two decades since Wilson and Gaugh founded the Long Beach Dub Allstars (LBDA), joined by frequent Sublime contributors Michael “Miguel” Happoldt, Todd Forman and “Field” Marshall Goodman. The SoCal group first came together in the late 90s after the tragic overdose of Sublime’s lead singer, Bradley Nowell, continuing on the musical evolutionary path and the legacy of the band. LBDA recorded their debut album Right Back, which — shortly after completion in 1999 — saw the unfortunate departure of three members. Their second album, Wonders of the World, was recorded and released in 2001 with a guest appearance from will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas.
You can feel the band’s commitment, joy and passion in each and every track.
This week, we will be hearing a robust return as LBDA is better than ever! The new self-titled much-awaited album — 15 years in the making — kicks off on a high note with “Tell Me”, a song that begins with a bright and luminous sound before slowly building into a catchy chorus, accented with a full horn section and prominent keys signature to LBDA. “Easy” finds guest artist Tippa Lee delivering vivid, almost spoken word vocals, backed by a punchy, bass-laden beat and rich, reverberating instrumentals.
If you are restricted to your home, like the majority of us at the moment, the new 10-track offering from Long Beach Dub Allstars will take you through a much needed journey. You can feel the band’s commitment, joy and passion in each and every track. The vocals and tone throughout are strangely comforting and reassuring with a hint of nostalgia. Some things can’t be rushed and the wait was definitely worth it! Overall, front-to-back, this is a great listen; you have everything: from hammering drums, tight guitar riffs and deep bass lines to catchy vocal melodies accompanied by a full horn section. What’s not to like?
