The answer to human suffering is simple — just be really energetic and dance. At least, that is the motto electro duo SOFI TUKKER broadcasts in their latest album BREAD, complete with a delicious acronym you can never forget.
‘BREAD’ is the album you never know you kneaded.
But before we preheat the oven, let’s preface on the duo’s successes to date. Sofi’s sweet Portuguese paired to Tukker’s bottom-bumping beats has always given the two an edge in the EDM industry. A SOFI TUKKER track hits just as hard in a morning yoga class as it does at the club later that night, with one of their more bossa nova singles welcoming you into the coffee shop the next morning after as you wait in line for hangover juice.
And their live show compounds on their undeniable talent. Sofi strapped to a bass, singing and swinging her hips, while Tukker takes the mic in between drumming on various surfaces around the stage… it’s truly an event to behold and entertainment at its finest.
Which leads us to BREAD — it’s time to roll out and shake some buns, people! Considering everything going on around the globe, the least we can do is be really energetic and dance as we watch the world burn around us. Starting with the title track, listeners get served a big slice of YOLO as Sofi sings “I get off // You get out // I eat bread”. Life’s too short to just loaf about with the same ‘ol lovers. (OK, I’ll stop with the bread puns.)
The cure for a hyperactive sex drive?
“Throw some ass, free the mind.”
“Hello doctor… Can you give me something stronger?” A desperate Sofi sings she’s tried everything to rid herself of pain, from cortisone to honey to spending loads of money. What’s left when you have thrown everything at the wall? Throwing some ass. Turn around, can you make it clap? *Men of 65 and older: do not listen to this track if you are diagnosed with any kind of heart or coronary condition*. What’s even more scrumptious than the diagnosis is the video for the single, with Sofi doing water aerobics with bread as weights while Tukker stands poolside bare buns.
But the whole LP isn’t just a sun’s out, buns-out party. More heartfelt tracks include “Guardian Angel (Stand By You)” and “Spiral”, with the latter detailing how easily love can dovetail. Despite the serious subject matter, the song remains extremely danceable, living up to the album’s ethos. “Woof”, featuring Kah-Lo, is a prime example of “is-it-night-club-or-is-it-yoga” paradigm of SOFI TUKKER songs; whatever the consensus, it’s infectious, especially Tukker’s deep bassy voice.
The rest of the album slices in learning opportunities, one being language.
Turns out, there are words in Portuguese that require full-sentence English translation, as in the word “Cafuné”, literally translating to “the act of gently running your fingers through a loved one’s hair”. Why we don’t have an English equivalent for that one is honestly the question… ? A word we do have is “Jacaré”, or “alligator”, which comes up at track nine. Considering how much BREAD‘s been thrown in the water, other creatures will naturally want a bite. Ending with the track “Perfect Someone”, this album wraps up sweetly after so much savory indulgence.
But that’s not the end of the bread line. For carbo-loaders who want even more BREAD, a limited edition pressing of the album has been released on violet and white marble vinyl — complete with poster insert!
