Once again steering clear of cornering themselves into a single genre, Lost In Paradise is the debut album from Orange County reggae-rock outfit the Common Kings. Released early this month, the album quickly landed the band in the #1 spot on both iTunes and Amazon sales charts.
The songs take up an R&B essence, enhancing the underlying danceability
The opening song and title track, “Lost In Paradise,” precisely sums up the outcome of the album; while the Common Kings took a calculated turn in some of their music, aiming for a more pop-like sound, they proved their dedication to creating something unexpected and thus aspired to impress both current fans and new fans alike. The songs take up an R&B essence, enhancing the underlying danceability, and yet carry out an tight reggae tone. The album is consistent throughout the first half, with tracks that are lively and dynamic. It shifts a tad about midway through as lead vocalist Jr King takes the lead once more, singing soulfully with a wide range of belting notes. Every track on Lost In Paradise brings new life to the album, while simultaneously giving a message of vulnerability, bravery through hardship, and of course, love.
It may have taken Common Kings years to create an album unique and both publicly and self appealing, but Lost In Paradise is a humble reminder that hard work and a bit of persistence can truly result in something beautiful, both on the outside and within.
