Singer, poet, songwriter, visual artist, film producer, activist, and author Serj Tankian — and lest we forget to mention, frontman and lyricist for the GRAMMY Award-winning rock band System of a Down — returns with his new single, “Justice Will Shine On”.
The raging impassioned hard-rocking tune is available worldwide now via Gibson Records.
The emotionally driven track is a story derived from the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916, experienced by his grandparents firsthand. The lyrics detail the devastating amount of pain brought on by the senseless killing of an entire generation in the Ottoman Empire by the radical party known as the Committee of Union and Progress during World War I. “Can you tell me, dear grandfather, of your childhood, so far away // You can see the death of laughter in his teared eyes, disarray // Can you tell me, dear grandmother, of your childhood from hunger and pain // Of the orphans you called brothers in her teared eyes, disarray.”
Raised in Los Angeles, Serj Tankian was originally born in Lebanon. Although selling millions of albums in System of A Down, he creates his own music that tells stories of his Armenian culture and heritage. Tankian’s conviction to telling the true story behind the genocide is not only brave, but inspiring. This track will appear on the EP Foundations, set to be released on September 27th.
On top of this epic announcement, Serj has also released in May a thought-provoking debut memoir Down with The System — a spiritual manifesto and New York Times best-seller. Tankian is on mission to let the world know a side of history that so many have no knowledge of. I think it is important for us to listen, as the Armenian victims of yesteryear deserve our attention.
